Steve Fisher

steve fisher

Steve wrote Life as a Letter from Sea.

Steve Fisher is an Urban Planner and contributor at Torontoist. He also writes frequently for A.V. Club Toronto, and has contributed arts reviews and features to CBC Music, The Grid, OpenFile, and more. He’s also a 14-year veteran of the Canadian Naval Reserves—working summers for the Navy paid for his BFA Degree in Theatre at Ryerson University. He currently trains sailors at HMCS York (Toronto’s Naval Reserve Division) on his weekends (and one or two nights a week) in First Aid & CPR, seamanship, small boats and small arms handling, and heads out to the East or West Coast a few weeks a year to get reacquainted with life at sea.

Here’s Jason Collett’s “I’ll bring the Sun,” which Steve got to play on the boat.

Here’s another video showing sailors aboard a Kingston Class Maritime Coastal Defense Vessel (MCDV) for a recent exercise (Steve’s served on HMCS Whitehorse and HMCS Brandon).

(They focus on the bos’n's working—small boats, weapons, upper deck seamanship—so there’s a lot of things in the video that he would do day to day at sea.)

Here’s some info links and pictures of the Kingston-Class MCDVs
